Communicating Scientific Findings with Instagram

Background:

The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU AD CGSB) wanted to raise awareness and disseminate updates on recent research papers written by NYU scientists and other significant scientific discoveries. However, the challenge was translating complex scientific information into an easily understandable form for a broad audience.

The Challenge:

The challenge in this case study was to utilize creative methods to simplify and effectively communicate the scientific content on NYUAD CGSB’s Instagram account in a form that is easy to understand for a broad audience.

The Goal:

The objective in this case study was to effectively communicate the scientific content on NYUAD CGSB’s Instagram account to a broad audience through the use of creative visuals and easily comprehensible methods.

Methodology & Approach

In this Project, the following methodology was implemented to promote new discoveries in genomics for the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at New York University Abu Dhabi,

  1. A comprehensive analysis of the objectives and target audience of NYU AD CGSB was conducted.
  2. A target audience persona was clearly defined, and a SWOT analysis of the current Instagram account was performed.
  3. A communication framework and methodology were established and implemented among all relevant stakeholders.
  4. A design kit was created to guide the content’s visual aspect.
  5. A weekly content calendar was formulated, outlining the content and designs to be delivered, which included various formats such as infographics, posters, carousels, gifs and videos.

Key Results:

The methodology implemented in this case study led to the following key results:

  • A marketing plan and strategy to effectively promote new discoveries through Instagram.
  • Successful implementation of a weekly content calendar to disseminate information and promote the latest discoveries in genomics.
  • Creating a design kit to guide the visual aspect of the content on the Instagram account.
  • The NYC Instagram account has experienced a remarkable increase in its follower base over a short period, with a growth rate of 77.3% in the past eight months, adding +10k new followers. This is a clear indication of a heightened engagement among its audience with the content being published on the account.
